Hustlers Beat Steam 1-0 for Opening Day Win!

Austin Clay (WKU) led the Hustlers to victory on Thursday night with a impressive eight and 1/3 inning performance. The 2012 All-Star scattered just seven hits and struck out three on his way to his first win of the 2013 summer. The Hustlers put together 12 hits, but could only muster one run on an RBI single from Ryan Hodge (Gardner-Webb) in the bottom of the 7th inning.

In the top of the 9th, Matt Williams (Cincinnati) lead off with a single and was sacrificed to 2B. Derrick Lance (Tennessee) then singled and Williams advanced to 3B on the hit. The Hustlers opted to bring Evan McNair (Bellarmine) in from the bullpen and McNair worked out of the jam with back to back ground outs to record his 1st save of the summer.

Matthew Kaskow (Wofford) led the way offensively for the Hustlers (3-4 2B), along with strong performances from Matt Ramsay (Wofford, 2-4, 2B), Dorian Hairston (UK, 2-4), and Ryan Hodge (1-4, RBI). Trey Gross (Morehead St.), Tyler Jackson (Ole Miss), and Travis Ward (Olney) all had a hit a piece in the season opener.

The Hustlers (1-0) head up to Cincinnati tonight to take on the Steam (1-0) for their home opener at Western Hills High School. Shaun Meyer (Georgetown) will get the start tonight against the Steam’s Eric Martin (Tennessee). First pitch set for 7:05 PM.

The Hustlers return home on June 11th to take on the Dayton Docs at Georgetown College at 7:00 PM.
