Honchel Named Freshman All-American

Miami outfielder honored by Collegiate Baseball magazine

Matt Honchel

TUSCON, Ariz. — Miami outfielder Matt Honchel has been named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced today. He is the seventh player in school history, the first since 2005, to earn the honor.

The Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, Honchel posted a league-best .395 batting average with 92 hits in 233 at-bats. He currently stands 14th overall, and is the leading freshman, in the NCAA’s national statistics rankings.

Honchel, a native of Harrodsburg, Ky., played in all 59 games for Miami, starting 57 of those between outfield and designated hitter positions. He hit safely in 49 contests, never going more than two consecutive games without a base-knock, and finished the year with a team-season best 16-game hitting streak. He registered multiple hits on 31 occasions, another team-best, highlighted by a trio of four-hit performances — against Toledo twice (3/31 and 4/1) and at Kent State (5/12). Honchel’s hit total was the fourth-most in a single season at Miami, just four shy of the school record, and stands 16th in the country.

Additionally, he ranks 15th in the country in the “Toughest to Strike Out” category, fanning once every 17.9 at-bats. The last Freshman All-America selection at Miami was John Ely, currently at the Triple-A level in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, in 2005. The five others named to various teams were Ted Ward (1990), Chris Leonard (2000), Graham Taylor (2003) and Jeff Day and Keith Weiser in 2004. Honchel is one of 14 outfielders selected to the team, which can be viewed here.
